Reliability & Maintenance Strategy Glossary
Working reference for reliability terminology, common formulas, and terms used throughout this portal.
Reliability, R(t)
Probability that an item performs its required function without failure for a stated time under stated conditions.
Failure Probability, F(t)
Probability that failure has occurred by time t.
Failure Rate, λ
Failure occurrence rate per unit operating exposure. A constant λ is only a simplifying assumption for the exponential model.
Exponential Reliability
Reliability model commonly used when the failure rate can reasonably be treated as constant.
MTBF
Mean Time Between Failures for repairable equipment; use consistent operating-time and failure-count boundaries.
MTTF
Mean Time To Failure, commonly used for non-repairable items or one-life failure analysis.
MTTR
Mean Time To Repair/Restore after a failure. The exact clock boundary must be governed consistently.
Inherent Availability, Ai
Steady-state availability using MTBF and active corrective repair time; excludes many logistic and administrative delays.
Operational Availability, Ao
Observed availability including the downtime mechanisms included in the agreed operational boundary.
Maintainability, M(t)
Probability that a failed item can be restored within time t under stated maintenance conditions. For an exponential repair-time assumption:
Weibull Distribution
Flexible life model used to represent decreasing, approximately constant, or increasing hazard behavior.
Weibull β (Beta)
Shape parameter. β<1 indicates decreasing hazard, β≈1 constant hazard, and β>1 increasing hazard in the fitted population.
Weibull η (Eta)
Characteristic life; at t=η the Weibull reliability is e^(−1), approximately 36.8%.
Hazard Function, h(t)
Instantaneous failure propensity conditional on survival to time t.
Bad Actor
Equipment or failure mechanism that materially and repeatedly degrades reliability, availability, cost, safety, or production performance and therefore warrants focused elimination.
Failure Mode
The manner in which an item loses or degrades its required function. A maintenance task should be traceable to a credible failure mode or assurance requirement.
Hidden Failure
Failure not evident to operations during normal demand-free conditions; especially important for protective and standby functions.
Functional Failure
Inability of an asset to meet a required function or required performance standard.
PM Compliance
Execution compliance against the governed preventive-maintenance schedule. The numerator and due-date tolerance must be explicitly defined.
Maintenance Plan Coverage
Portal indicator showing the share of scoped equipment with a registered maintenance plan.
RCM
Reliability-Centered Maintenance: a structured method for selecting applicable and effective maintenance policies from functions, functional failures, failure modes, consequences, and task effectiveness.
RBI
Risk-Based Inspection: inspection planning using probability and consequence of failure to prioritize integrity inspection effort.
CBM
Condition-Based Maintenance: maintenance initiated or adjusted using measured condition or degradation evidence.
PdM
Predictive Maintenance: use of condition, trend, diagnostic, or prognostic information to anticipate degradation/failure and plan intervention.
PM
Preventive Maintenance: planned maintenance performed at predetermined intervals or according to prescribed criteria to reduce failure probability or degradation.
RTF
Run-to-Failure: deliberate policy to allow failure before restoration/replacement. In this portal, Z criticality is only an RTF candidate and still passes safety, environmental, statutory, SECE, hidden-function, redundancy, repairability, and secondary-damage screening.
SECE
Safety and Environment Critical Element: equipment, system, or element whose function is important to preventing, detecting, controlling, or mitigating a major-accident hazard. The MAH study overlay is evidence and does not auto-write the core marker.
PCE / Production Criticality
Production-critical classification based on business/production consequence. It is a different axis from SECE; low production criticality does not cancel safety/environment assurance obligations.
Criticality H / I / M / L / Z
Governing equipment criticality scale used by the portal. Z means negligible production/equipment criticality, not unknown. SECE remains an independent assurance axis.
Criticality Treatment
How task applicability, interval rigor, redundancy expectations, and review depth are adjusted according to equipment criticality.
SECE Treatment
Additional mandatory assurance, test, inspection, evidence, or governance requirement applied because the asset supports a safety/environment critical function.
Maintenance Strategy
Governed policy that defines how an equipment family/profile is maintained: applicable tasks, condition/interval basis, assurance requirements, and implementation gates.
Strategy Status
Governance state of a Catalog Profile strategy, such as APPROVED or an action/reclassification state requiring closure before deployment.
Asset Register
Equipment-level corporate register used as the main population reference for maintenance-strategy deployment and reconciliation.
Equipment Family
Engineering grouping of equipment with sufficiently similar function and maintenance architecture to share a governed family template.
Catalog Profile
Profile-level classification that links equipment characteristics to a standardized maintenance-strategy reference, task package, and plan logic.
Family 360°
Family-level engineering workspace connecting population, profiles, criticality/SECE, strategy, task, plan, BOM/material evidence, readiness, and engineer review.
Equipment 360°
Equipment-level digital thread bringing together master data, criticality, SECE, strategy, tasks, plan evidence, BOM/material evidence, and deployment status.
Task List / Task Package
Standardized maintenance tasks and their applicability, purpose, trigger, acceptance criteria, escalation logic, and criticality/SECE treatment.
Maintenance Plan
Scheduling object/rule that converts a governed maintenance requirement into recurring or condition-triggered execution in SAP PM.
BOM
Bill of Material: equipment–material relationship evidence. The portal treats existing BOM as evidence to reconcile against maintenance demand, not as automatic proof of task/material requirement.
MRO Material
Maintenance, Repair and Operations material. General MRO items are intentionally separated from equipment-specific and family-standard spare requirements.
TMR
Task Material Requirement: material/component need linked to a maintenance task and applicability logic before comparison with the existing equipment BOM.
FLOC
Functional Location in SAP PM; hierarchical technical location used to structure assets and maintenance objects.
GMS
Corporate maintenance-strategy reference used by the portal as one of the governing sources for profile/family maintenance development.
MAH Study Overlay
Additive Major Accident Hazard study evidence layer containing node, SECE group/subgroup/element, tag, and source lineage. It does not directly overwrite core equipment master data.
Marker Reconciliation
Governed review where MAH evidence identifies an equipment SECE relationship but the current core SECE marker is not aligned. No automatic promotion/demotion is performed.
Deployment Gate G0–G6
Portal maturity path from in-scope equipment through master-data readiness, criticality/SECE, strategy approval, build readiness, plan registration, and scheduling evidence.
Build Ready
Equipment has passed the portal prerequisites to translate the approved maintenance strategy/task baseline into an executable SAP maintenance plan.
Scheduling Evidence
Observed maintenance-plan/call evidence used to verify that a registered plan has corresponding scheduling/execution records in the available extract.
Engineer Review
Human decision gate used where the portal detects data, configuration, applicability, material/BOM, or reconciliation questions. The portal prepares evidence; the engineer owns the engineering conclusion.
